I've been struggling trying to get Madelynn to latch on to my breast for some time now...and I was just getting so bummed that she seemed to have nothing to do with breastfeeding...it made me a bit sad to be honest....
I was feeling tied down by the constant pumping...because it seemed I had to plan my activities around when the next time I needed to pump was...and if I was going to be gone long it required me lugging around the big ol bag it comes in...(I use a Medela pump in style) and it's just not neat! I just wish she would nurse off of me so I wouldn't have to worry about pumping when I go out in public...
My sister reminded me that my StepMom was having trouble nursing our little brother when he was a baby and had a guard of sorts on her breast while feeding him because she had inverted nipples....it helped him and he nursed until he weaned himself at 10 months...
So I went to Medelas website and found it! I was so excited....and the best part is that the ditty is sold at Target of all places so I ran out and picked it up...along with the next size up in diapers :( (she's growing so fast) and tried it out the second I got home...I had read the 'tricks' on the medela website for first time feedings with it when using it for a 'latching problem' it was to fill up the tip with breast milk and put the baby to the breast after attaching the shield to my nipple....and viola...it worked! She nursed off both sides like a champ for the first time in quite some time! I loved it....She's since done two more feedings at the breast with the shield and it's going great!
I tried to see if she'd go straight to the nipple, but she still just roots all around as though it's not right in front of her face/in her mouth! The website said it will take some babies just a few feedings to get the clue that there is milk coming out the breast...and others a couple weeks of use...I'm just happy it's working :)
This is the ditty I'm speaking of...this one is called the 'contact nipple shield' by medela
And then for chuckles here's a picture I took of the two of us two days ago...It's a self portrait ditty of sorts :)

How cool that you didn't give up. I wish I'd known about that when my baby was small! Congrats
I second that. I pumped for an entire year for my daughter! On her first birthday I put the Pump and Style away and haven't seen it since. And after 18 months my nipples still feel numb.
Keep up the good work! Home girl is adorable!
Thats so good. My best friend used that with her baby too for a few months I think. Thats great!
I am so proud of you. You are my breast feeding hero! Good for you for not giving when the going got tough. I admire your persaverance! You should feel like a champ. Way to go!
That is exactly what I used with Evan because I had a hard time getting him to latch on. Unfortunately even with the shield he would get frustrated after a while and quit so I finally gave up because I got so sick of pumping. (and then one of my dogs chewed it up, so that was that) Keep at it though, it sounds like she's doing great with it!
